Art & Crafts, up cycling & repurposing

Work Smart

Decluttering, at your own pace.

Clutter. We all have it. Whether it’s nice nacks, mail, magazines, clothes or necessities, our garages, craft rooms, etc. Some of us even have the dreadful clutter of a Tupperware cabinet. I’ll be the first to admit, I am far from organized. Some things though, if I put them away I will never find them again. I’m sure most of us have been there.

Going through my art & craft supplies, I tend to collect things to up-cycle. I am trying to be a little more organized in that department. So I started getting rid of things…. Like empty containers. There’s even things I collected for a project to try for my blog. Bottle caps. Making a cutting board and tiles out of bottle caps. For the cutting board alone I need 250 plastic caps. It’ll be well worth it!

I know decluttering and organizing is never easy. For some of us it’s the motivation of it. Take it slow. Practice mindfulness and it goes easier. Think on the positive side…. You’ll be more organized in the end.

Here’s some tips to help declutter-

  1. Declutter 1 room at a time
  2. If you love it, you can decide to keep it. No one said you absolutely have to get rid of something you love. Use your best judgement.
  3. If you haven’t used it in 6 months, get rid of it. Same goes for the rule of thumb in our closets, if you haven’t worn it in a year, get rid of it.
  4. Dispose of the clutter right away.
  5. Organized clutter is still clutter.
  6. Mementos are more treasured when there are few of them. Make a memory box. If you have little things, organize them in a shadow box and hang it on the wall.
  7. Holding on to something for the β€œjust in case” might be holding you back from the things you have to have room for.
  8. Make piles- to keep, throw away, donate, sell.
  9. You are not defined by the things you keep.

  1. Nice post. Your nine tips are spot on, especially the one about the closet. Once decluttering is complete, we need to avoid the tendency to collect more stuff.

  6. How do you solve the problem of pictures on walls? What’s a rule of thumb in prioritizing which ones you display?

    1. For myself I like to hang pictures up with the command strips. That way if I want to re arrange later I can and not worry about a hole. For displaying- choose frames that you can easily switch out pictures. Go through them and pick out your favorites, then narrow it down from there. I like to lay them out on a table first and reorganize them for a good layout that I like before I hang them.
Pinterest has some great ideas for diy frames.
