Fried Apples for Breakfast

One of the recipes I came across from the 1800’s is Fried Apples. It’s a simple dish that’s easy to make and so delicious!

Apples are easily accessible, easy to store and versatile. Every part of the fruit served a purpose. The peels were fermented into vinegar, the bruised apples were used to make sauce & jelly and the seeds were cultivated into new trees.

Preservation was key to survival. Families would put apple slices on a string and hang them to dry. After they dried, they would either can the apples in syrup or pressed them into hard cider and apple butter.

Back then , fried apples were made for a hearty breakfast meal.

Let’s make some fried apples shall we?

Ingredients:

Apples- the amount to use depends on how many people you’re making this for.

Cinnamon & sugar

Butter or lard- amount used depends on how many apples.

Supplies needed:

Frying pan or cast iron pan

Tongs

Large spoon or spatula

Bowl/plate to serve them on

Bowl for the cinnamon and sugar

Peeler

Step 1:

Wash and peel the apples. Once they are peeled, cut the apples up to approximate 1/4” slices.

Step 2:

Mix the cinnamon and sugar in a bowl.

Step 3:

Turn on the stove and put the butter or lard into the pan. Once melted, add the apples to the pan turning them so both sides get golden in color.

Once the apples are cooked, turn off the stove and sprinkle the cinnamon & sugar mixture on to the apples and stir making sure to cover both sides.

Step 4:

Serve and enjoy!!

You can serve them by themselves or with a scoop of ice cream for dessert. If you really want more, you can drizzle caramel over the top of them.

Hope you all enjoy this recipe as much as I did!
