Work Smart

If anything, learn the basics

Now a days, prices of food has gone up. Some people are just barely making ends meet. There’s some people who cannot afford even the basic ingredients like corn meal. I like to make my own things like butter, seasonings, extracts, brown sugar, powdered sugar. The list goes on. It helps save a few dollars here and there plus, it’s fresh. Non processed. No added anything.

There are people who do not know how to make certain things or where to start. Years back, when I first started making my own ingredients, I never realized how easy it was. For me, I have to be on a “anti inflammatory” diet. Which means to eat as fresh of foods as I can. Non processed.

So today, I’m going to show you how to make corn meal.

A couple tips

There are different types of corn.

Sweet corn has a higher content of sugar in it. This will affect the texture and color of your cornmeal.

There’s sweet corn and field corn.

Field corn has lower sugar and higher starch content. The varieties of field corn are: dent, flint & flour. I will not get into the history of corn however, the corn I used today is flint corn.

We have an air popcorn popper, we keep a big bag of kernels in the freezer. So I used that today. Really, if you buy microwave popcorn, you can save the unpopped kernels and use those to make cornmeal.

Most cornmeal is made using Field corn. Back in the old days, they used a grinder mill to grind the kernels. (There may be a more technical name).

I do believe I saw one of these in our garage. Now I’m anxious to find it.

Today, I used a coffee bean grinder.

Supplies needed:

Corn kernels

Paper towels

Spoon

Jar with lid

Grinder – I used a coffee grinder

Mortar & pestle – optional

Step 1

I put the kernels into a small condiment dish and only used half that. I made enough to sprinkle on the stone in the oven. You can make as much as you’d like. Just keep repeating the steps.

Put some of the kernels into the grinder. (I over filled it 😬)

Step 2

Put the lid on your grinder ( if using an electric one) and press the button. You will leave it on till it looks like ground coffee.

I checked mine, replaced the lid on the grinder and turned it back on for a couple of seconds to see if I can grind it any smaller. It helped a little.

At this point you can take a mortar & pestle and try grinding it smaller.

I do recommend using the mortar & pestle after using the grinder if this is going in food. Mine was perfect for what I needed it for.

Your finished!

Put the corn meal you made in a jar with lid. You may want to label it. that’s it, pretty simple!

Hope this will help you in your kitchen endeavors. 😊

  1. A lot of things are a lost art now days, butter I have found isnt quite cost effective to make at home but i do have a couple of sources to get it as well as fresh milk and cream locally. I can’t remember if you are close to us but I can email you the details if you want.

    1. I don’t think we are close. I’d love the info though if we are! Northern Illinois
I make other things that we use heavy cream for. So it’s cheaper for me this way where we live. Groceries here are super expensive.
