You can do what with Baking Powder?

looking

Hello everyone, happy weekend! The other day I was researching about a project I want to do for another post, and I need Soda Ash/Washing Soda. I really do not like buying things unnecessarily. So of course, I did more research and figured out how to make my own Soda Ash/Washing Soda. If I knew it was that easy to make I would of done this a very long time ago.

Here is an article I found.

Without further ado….

Baking dish

parchment paper

baking soda

spoon or spatula

jar with lid

label

Preheat oven to 425 degrees

Step 1 –

Line the baking dish with parchment paper. Then pour the baking soda into the pan, about 1/2″ thick.

When the oven is at 425 degrees, put the baking dish in the oven for 1 1/2 hours.

Stirring occasionally.

When the 1 1/2 hours are up, carefully remove from oven. The baking soda will be hot. put some on a spoon to cool off and you will need to touch it.

Regular baking soda feels soft. Almost like baby powder.

Soda Ash / Washing Soda feels grainy. Almost like a coarse sand.

** If the Soda Ash on the spoon feels grainy then it is done. But to be sure, stir what is in the baking dish and repeat to touch the Soda Ash a couple more times. When I made this, parts were done, and some were not. I needed to put it back in the oven for another 20 minutes, checking every 10 minutes.

* * DO NOT LET THE BAKING POWDER GET BROWN** If it does, scoop out the brown and throw that part out.

** Every oven is different. My oven takes longer than normal to cook things. If your oven cooks/bakes things quickly, lower the time in the oven to approx. 45 minutes, stirring occasionally. You can always add more time if it is not done.

When the Soda Ash/Washing Soda is done, take it out of the oven to cool off. Once cooled, pour it into the jar and cover with lid. Don’t forget to label so you do not get confused what it is.
