Work Smart

DIY Preventative Flea & Tick Spray

Hello everyone. As an animal lover with a dog and several cats I know the worry of our pets getting fleas or ticks. Plus, treatment can get pricey. I came across a couple different DIY recipes for flea & tick spray for dogs & cats. Give it a try and let me know your thoughts!

Apple Cider vinegar has an acidic taste that ticks can’t stand! It helps to repel the ticks.

Table salt can kill larvae and the eggs, it dehydrates them until they die.

Baking Soda will help release the tick from attaching to the animal’s body.

Supplies Needed:

Measuring cup

1/2 cup of warm water

1 cup Apple Cider Vinegar

1/2 teaspoon of salt

1/2 teaspoon of Baking Soda

Spray bottle

Paper towel in case of spill

In the measuring cup, put the salt & baking soda in. Then slowly pour the warm water in.

Next pour in the apple cider vinegar, being careful not to splatter. After you pour the apple cider vinegar in, it will create a sort of hissing sound and start foaming. Totally normal!

Mix well. Carefully pour your mixture into a spray bottle.

Done! Store in a cool dry place. Spray your pet’s body with this preventative flea & tick spray, holding about 6-8 ” away. Being careful not to spray their face.

This is only a preventative. But works pretty well.

If you are an essential oil type person, you will like this.

Lavender oil naturally repels ticks. It’s a strong smell to them so it deters them.

Cedar oil blocks the ticks scent receptors which in turn controls their breathing and movement. It also works on dehydrating ticks. It helps prevent against tick eggs & larvae.

Approx. 15 drops of Lavender essential oil

Approx. 15 drops of Cedar oil

1 cup of water (I use distilled water. You can use regular tap water)

Spray Bottle

Paper towel in case of spill

In the spray bottle, add 1 cup of water. Next add 15 drops each of the essential oils, you can add more or less. Replace the lid and shake well.

Spray your cat and/or dog about 6″ away being careful not to spray the face.

That’s it. Store in a cool dry space. I have been told people spray their animals with either of these sprays daily or every other day. We do not have many ticks up here, so I do not spray them as often as that.

    1. When I was doing research I read if you sprinkle baking soda around areas like door frames itโ€™ll help prevent them. Itโ€™s something with baking soda they donโ€™t like. Especially if the tick is in the animalโ€™s skin, sprinkle it on the tick and itโ€™ll start to wiggle out of the skin. Hope that makes sense.

    1. It works pretty good. I mainly use it on one of our cats because sheโ€™s an indoor/outdoor cat. She gets around the neighborhood through the trees an such. So far so good
