Hello everyone. While reorganizing my spice cabinet today I made notes on what I’m running low on or need. Nothings worse then going to make something, thinking you have everything and you really don’t. 😳. Even worse is when someone kindly puts the empty bottle back in the cabinet.
Today was the Almond extract. Thank God it’s not a dire need to make the cookies my daughter wanted to make. We opted to make ice cream instead.
While I was at it, I made Almond extract. Without further ado-
Supplies needed:
4 oz. Glass bottle with lid
80% proof vodka or stronger
1/8-1/4 cup of slivered, chopped up almonds.
Paper towels in case of mess
Food grinder, coffee grinder or knife
Strainer
Bowl or cup
Funnel
Step 1 –
Measure out and chop up approximately 1/8-1/4 cup of almonds. Once the almonds are chopped up, put them in your glass bottle (or you can even use a glass jar).
Step 2 –
Carefully pour the vodka into the jar until it’s almost full. Leaving a little room at the top.
Put the lid on and let it sit for 6 weeks. That’s it!
After the 6 weeks, check your Almond Extract and if it smells or you sample a taste and it’s good enough to you, then carefully with a bowl or you can use a cup even, using your strainer, strain the almonds from the extract you made. Being careful not to spill the extract into the bowl or cup. Once you separated the two, then take your funnel and glass bottle, you will want to pour the extract back into the bottle. Replace lid and don’t forget to label it.
Happy extract making!!
