Uses for salt other than our diet

We all know too much salt is bad for you. Although there is a condition when you don’t have enough salt. Other than cooking, here is a list I’ve compiled of some of the many ways you can use table salt.

1. Sanitizing cutting boards. Make a salt scrub- mix 1/2 cup of salt with 2 Liters of warm or room temperature water. Put some on a wet dishcloth and thoroughly scrub the cutting board.

2. Clean your fridge. Make the salt scrub I mentioned in #1.

3. Removing water marks on wood. Mix a approx. 1 teaspoon of salt with a little water to form a paste. Gently rub the paste on the mark with a damp washcloth and rub until it’s removed. Then follow up with furniture polish.

( I’ve done this with fresh water marks. Not old ones yet)

4. Old mop/dish sponges. Soak the sponge in a salt water solution (mentioned in #1) . Let sit overnight. Next day remove the sponge and rinse.

5. Icy patio or steps in the winter? If you run out of salt to pour on the icy steps you can use table salt. It works quicker the. The other stuff!

6. mouth disinfectant . Out of mouthwash or if you have a canker sore. Stir 1 teaspoon of cooking salt with 1 teaspoon of baking soda into half a cup of water, then gargle the mixture. The salt behaves like a disinfectant, killing off bacteria that causes bad breath.

7. Need to chill beverages fast? Warm soda, beer, and wine can spell disaster for any party host. But if you have salt on hand, chilling those beverages won’t take long. Place the bottles and cans in a bucket of ice water and mix in a handful of salt. Once the salt works its magic, the beverages will be cold in no time.

8. Relieve a sore throat. Mix a little table salt with a Dixie cup of warm water and gargle for about 15-20 seconds. This help relieve the pain.

9. Not sure if your eggs are bad? Pour a little salt in a cup of water. Put your egg in the cup. If the egg sinks, it’s still good. If it floats, it’s bad.

10. Fleas on the pet. Wash your animal in a salt/water mixture. Salt will dehydrate the fleas killing them.

There are many many more ways salt can be used. These are just a few that I know work good. 😊

  1. #5 definitely. I found that out quite a few years ago. I debated just buying a ton of table salt every winter after that lol

      1. I remember an old guy at work told me he did that, so I tried it one time when I ran out and damned if he wasn’t right. It’s darn near instant!

      2. Too bad table salt comes in small quantities compared to the big bags of the other outdoor salt.

      3. I know! If we could get them in bags like the larger rice ones, that would be great.

      1. Too much or too little salt is dangerous, but eating without salt is no fun
