Work Smart

Good or bad

What technology would you be better off without, why?

In our world full of technology, I think we have too much. When I was little, we didnโ€™t have a computer and when computers came out and my parents got one, it was theirs. If we needed to look up information or do a report for school, we went to the library. If you did not know what a word meant, you used the dictionary. You wanted to take a picture, you used your actual camera. Go on vacation, write a postcard. There were no cell phones.

Gamesโ€ฆ. Of course we had a Nintendo and Atari. But we had what is called our โ€œimagination โ€œ. We went outside to play, rode our bikes. Were told to come home before dark. Now a days, kids are so zoned into the tv , cell phones, Xbox or Play station.

By nature, when the seasons change and it gets cold out, we automatically go to our thermostat & turn the heat on. Personally, in our house we go to the fireplace and use that until itโ€™s too cold out. Then the heat goes on. The fireplace warms our house for two days before we have to light it again. With what they have now as โ€œsmart devicesโ€.

Now donโ€™t get me wrong, I live off my laptop, Iโ€™m learning digital designing, We have a tv in almost every room, my kids have cell phones & video games. I know my way around technology. But now, in our modern world, thereโ€™s too much.

I remember a couple years ago I was talking to my niece and she had no clue what a pay phone was. My youngest daughter didnโ€™t know what the indexโ€™s were at the library where you had to get the card out of the drawer and look for your book. She seriously thought I was going nuts! She laughed at me. I go in the library now and you go to the computer.

To sum things up, there is not one piece of technology in specific that I could do without. We have too much all together.

  1. This brought memories of sitting in the library doing my school report. Now I can look it all up on my phone.
I also miss the accuracy of the dictionary and encyclopedia because they had to tell the truth. Now days you have to watch out for fake or misinformation as you search

    1. I agree. Itโ€™s not that I donโ€™t like technology. I just feel itโ€™s too much. Back then it was so simple. Plus with the โ€œsmartโ€ technology you have to watch for hackers

  2. Excellent post, Melodie! And my response to this prompt, I talked about smart phones. It kind of ties into what you said about โ€œhaving all this technology togetherโ€œ. Sure, individual devices are great in theory, but when everything gets tied together in the one little contraption, we do become way too dependent upon it.

And as far as the card catalog is concerned, I think we have to remember that libraries havenโ€™t had the old card catalog system for AT LEAST 25 years, maybe even closer to 30 at this point. Weโ€™re at a point in time where the card catalog is going to seem almost as antiquated as a washboard would be to us.

    1. ๐Ÿ˜‚ your right. Itโ€™s funny thinking about the card index that way. Man I feel old now!

      2. Well, if you think about it your right. An antique washboard to us would be equivalent to a pay phone or card index to kids now a days.

      3. Well, this isnโ€™t talking about something old, but I read some thing online the other day where somebody said it was only 66 years between the Wright brothers first flight and the Apollo 11 landing on the moon

  3. This is such a great post. I could totally relate. I grew up the same way, except using the fireplace. I wish we used ours growing up!

I was telling my nieces about the time when I lived abroad and there wasnโ€™t e-mail and how Iโ€™d write and receive letters. They were all wide eyed!

Iโ€™m glad Iโ€™m in the generation that straddled w/ and w/o technology. Itโ€™s given me perspective and also the know how to be able to survive w/o if need be. Great post. Thank you!

  5. I guess it more about the mindset that you have when you approach technology then technology itself. If you feel empower technology is what you need. If you feel controlled or lost, technology is disempowering you. This is a small summary of a scientific article that I did in the matter if you are curious https://francescolelli.info/publication/agency-in-human-smart-device-relationships-an-exploratory-study/

  6. Let’s get rid of social media platforms that we know have negative impacts on our lives. I’m talking Instagram, TikTok, etc. Let’s keep the productive ones that help us learn and achieve, like Pinterest, LinkedIn, etc.

  10. I’m in my 20s and I also could tell that, this is too much. we don’t even need that much. technology is consuming every cell of our mind, body, and soul. I hate to admit that nowadays people don’t really interact with each other outside this virtual world. I’ve seen this in my friends. they will talk to you over the phone but not in person. I don’t know maybe they hesitate to talk in person and some have totally different personalities both online and offline.
