Treasures

What’s the coolest thing you’ve ever found (and kept)?

I don’t really have anything like OMG cool. But I collect old things. Things that have history in our families. This is just a small section of what I have. Some things are too heavy to put up like a super old meat grinder dating from way way back in my husband’s family. There’s a stool that my great grandma (or great great grandma) brought back from Czechoslovakia. A old hanging kitchen scale. The things so big and heavy it’ll tear the ceiling down.

Then there’s things I cherish like my grandmas dish she gave me

It was my great grandmothers.

I have two rug beaters, 1 from my dads side and 1 from my mother in laws side.

My moms sewing table. I believe she said it was her mothers or my dads mothers. One of the two.

The things I have are family history. Which means more to me then anything brand new.

  1. I collect old aprons. It started with collecting my grandmothers’. It may sound weird but putting it on gave me a connection to long-ago family meals where my grandma was queen of the house and the kitchen. She poured her love into meals for all of us. I put it on and feel the love, and hopefully I’m carrying on that tradition.

      1. The first thing that came to mind was Carnival glass. I used to sell vintage and antique items on Etsy and came across that at some point. I’m not sure if that is what that is though.

      2. It’s funny you said that. That’s what I think it is, just didn’t want to say that cause I’m not 100%.
The colors are a bit different

  4. We have an old sewing machine but ours is the hand operated one. Almost a century old. 👏

      1. It’s over 75 years and it still runs perfectly. I’ll include it in a post tomorrow. Beautiful machine, cept that I can’t sew. It’s difficult trying to put the thread through the microscopic hole with my big paws.😶🙂

  6. My neighbors were throwing away a rusty Victorian-era steamer chest, so I gave it another life as apartment furniture! Then wrote fondly about the experience here: https://worldlyobservations.wordpress.com/2023/11/22/from-trash-to-treasure-chest/

  10. A rock that I found near an old uranium mine. I felt sure that it had some sort of gem in it since it had bright green rocks throuout it. However, we threw it away since my mother thought that it might be radioactive given its location. We might’ve thrown away at least thirty dollars if it had actually been the mineral I thought it was.

  11. A long time ago, I was at an auction and bid $10 on a unknown box of textiles. When I got home I found out there was an antique cross stitch sampler on linen and stitched in 1821. I turned that $10 into hundreds of dollars on EBAy. I felt rich and like I could have been a superstar on antiques roadshow. Luck usually is not in my favor of things such as this.

  13. The coolest things I’ve ever found and kept are a pair of wooden statues—one of an African man and another of an African woman. What captivates me about them is not just the fact that they have distinctly different features from our Asian faces, but also the expressions that adorn their faces. Their countenances exude a unique sense of contentment and enduring pleasure, capturing the essence of ‘mãn nguyện.’ Witnessing this perpetual joy in their faces resonates with my appreciation for people who find lasting happiness in life.
