Hey guys! Yesterday I was on Pinterest and I saw a tutorial on a DIY Rope Bowl. I always see them in stores or on ads. I’m too cheap to pay for one. I wanted to give it a go.
Supplies needed:
- Rope – I got mine from the Dollar store. They have different sizes. For a small 8″ glass bowl you will need 3 bundles of the medium size rope.
- Wood Glue – You can also use PVA glue. I’m sure Mod Podge would work also but I’m not sure if it will be as stiff as you need it once dry.
- Glass bowl or plastic bowl
- Plastic wrap
- Newspaper – to protect the work surface
- Disposable gloves

Step 1 —
Place newspaper on the table to protect the surface from glue. Turn your bowl upside down & then take your plastic wrap and cover the whole outside area of your bowl. Place it on top of the newspaper.

Step 2 —
Cover the plastic wrap with Wood Glue ( or glue of your choice). I put extra glue on the area.

Step 3 —
Take your rope, starting at the bottom middle of the bowl, and start putting the rope on. You would go in a spiral rotation.

So I unfortunately ran out of rope. I used the next size rope I have and honestly, it doesn’t look too bad. At least I’m keeping this for myself. 🙂
Step 4 —
After you have finished wrapping the rope around to make your bowl, you put the wood glue on the rope. This step is optional, however it does help it to become stiffer so the bowl won’t collapse. As long as you spread the glue out and not leave it in clumps on the rope, you won’t see the glue at all.
I thought of spray painting the bowl a different color after it’s dried but I think it looks cool as it. It took 3 hours for mine to dry. Once it is completely dry, turn the bowl over. With a butter knife or something similar, go around the edge of the bowl between the glass bowl & the saran wrap. Then loosely remove your rope bowl from the glass bowl. Once it is off you can carefully remove the saran wrap. I than proceeded to look over the bowl and if there was any part of the rope bowl that was a little flimsy, I spread the glue on that area. Let it dry. That’s it. It was super easy.
As always, feel free to send me pictures of your projects. I love to see what everyone has done!
