DIY Lavender Oil

Hi everyone! Today I was talking to a friend and she shared with me how she uses Lavender oil on her face as part of her skin care routine once a day. So I did my own research. I already know the benefits of Lavender itself, I wanted to share this with you.

Lavender is a Perennial Plant that grows back every year. It is known for it’s wonderful fragrance! These compounds include flavonoids, which are also found in vegetables and fruits, and coumarin and both have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant actions.

Lavender helps with-

  • It helps calm your nerves, helps lower blood pressure
  • Studies have shown that Lavender is known to help reduce anxiety & depression
  • Helps us sleep better- it can help improve our bodies Melatonin levels giving us a good nights sleep.
  • Helps women with Menstrual cramps – applying it to your lower abdomen aiding in less pain.
  • It’s still used today for its antimicrobial and antiviral properties
  • Helps eliminate acne, scars and dry skin
  • You can use Lavender also in baking/cooking Such as Lavender sugar, putting it in our food like cookies or pancakes.

Lavender flowers or buds

Carrier oil – today I am using Almond oil.

Jar with lid or a container with lid.

Paper towels in case of mess

Now, depending on what you are using it for, will base it off of the carrier oil you use. As I mentioned in a previous post, there are many different carrier oils. If you are using it for cooking, than be sure to choose an edible oil like Grapeseed oil or Extra Virgin Olive oil.

Step 1- In your jar, put your lavender buds/flowers in about half the jar.

Step 2- Next pour the carrier oil in. Put enough in that it is higher then the lavender in the jar.

Step 3- Put on lid and wait.

The Lavender oil needs to sit in a sunny, warm dry place and let it sit for between 1-3 weeks. The longer you let it sit the more the lavender will infuse in the oil. Shake the jar every once in awhile to mix it up.

PART 2

cheesecloth or strainer

Funnel

After your 1-3 weeks is up, you will now strain the lavender from the jar. The easiest way is to get a bowl and cheesecloth, Hold the cheesecloth over the top of the jar tightly while holding it over the bowl. You can also grab a strainer and strain that way. The only issue with that is the lavender seed may go through the holes of the strainer. The goal is to take the lavender flowers/buds out of the oil while still keeping the oil. so the lavender will go into the cheese cloth and the oil in the bowl. Once that is done, squeeze the lavender filled cheesecloth in to the bowl to get any more oil out of it.

Once complete, grab a funnel and put it over your jar. Pour the oil back into the jar. Place the lid on and that’s it! The whole project took me about 5-10 minutes.
