DIY Hummingbird Food

It was such a nice day out yesterday. We did some yard work, and while we were outside we noticed the bird feeders needed filling. I just got a new bird feeder from my sister & brother in law so I was anxious to get it out. I had a thought, I like to feed the hummingbirds too. So I decided this year I’ll make the hummingbird food. It was super easy! I thought I’d share it with you guys. It’s literally 2 ingredients.

Some recipes call for a ratio of 3-to-1 or 5-to-1. I like to go with a ratio of 4-to-1. So 1 cup of water to 1/4 cup of sugar. I have read that a 3-to- ratio is sweeter and can be used during the cold & rainy weather.

Hummingbird Nectar Recipe

Supplies:

Supplies:

1 Mason or Ball Jar

¼ cup of sugar per 1 cup of water

( I made 3 cups)

Measuring cup

Pot

Optional:

Labels

Marker

Instructions:

After you have your water and sugar measured out, you will start by heating the water on the stove.  Once the water is boiling, add in your sugar. So if you put 1 cup of water to boil, then you will add ¼ cup of sugar to the hot water.  I did 3 cups of water. That made more than enough to fill the hummingbird feeder and then some.

After you add in the sugar, stir until dissolved. Once it’s dissolved, turn off the stove and set the pot aside to cool.  When it’s cool, just add it into your feeder.

I labeled the jar so I wouldn’t forget what it was or get thrown out. Not like it’s hard to make, but still.

Keep it in the fridge to store.

In the past there has been some controversial issues on hummingbird’s food being red. Yes, hummingbirds like bright colors especially red.  But the color of their food does not necessarily have to be red for them to consume. They consume the clear just as much as when we used to buy the hummingbird food and it was red.

I have found by making the hummingbird food, it is much cheaper and there is no preservatives or additives like there is with the store bought. Please feel free to send me your pictures!
