Work Smart

Creating fun paper with chalk

Think back to when you were little… the spring/summer and even fall days. Going outside to play, drawing on the sidewalk with chalk. I loved to draw pictures on the sidewalk or hop scotch when I was a kid. Back then we used actual chalkboards in school. We were excited when the teacher would let us solve a problem or spell a word on the chalkboard.

Kids love to create things in general! I found an easy, fun project for kids! Marbling paper with colored chalk.

Lets give it a try!

Supplies needed:

Colored chalk

White paper – watercolor paper works great. Dollar store does carry it.

Plastic tub or aluminum pan – fill approx half way with water. (Big enough for a 8 1/2 x 11 piece of paper)

Grater

• Paper towels

Optional:

Toothpick or paint brush if you want to mix the colors.

Step 1:

Make sure to cover the surface of your work area or you can do this outside. It’s really not super messy. Start by filling the plastic tub about half way full with water.

Get 1-2 pieces of paper and the colors of chalk that you’d like to use.

Step 2:

With your grater and chalk, start by shredding the chalk with the grater over the top of the water. You want enough to cover the paper.

Step 3:

Once you have the colored shredded chalk on top of the water, you will start at the side of the inside of the tub of water and slowly dip the paper in the water so the paper goes underneath the chalk.

Once it’s in and under the chalk, you will slowly bring it up and the chalk will cover the paper.

Set it out to dry and you can repeat with more colors of chalk.

The 2 on the left were done using watercolor paper. The right one is regular printer paper. You can see how well the chalk stuck to the watercolor paper.

I did not swirl mine with a paintbrush or toothpick either, I love how it turned out!
Chalk on regular printer paper

You can use these in –

Scrapbooks

Journals

Greeting cards

Kids can color on them

Frame them and hang them on the wall.

Do fall themed colors and cut out leaves or pumpkins.

You can also use acrylic paint instead of chalk. Put some paint in a spray bottle, mix with just enough water to liquify it. Spray in the water and repeat the steps above.

Overall it’s a fun, unique way to create art!

Till next time,

~ Mel
