In the 1800’s one item they could get their hands on easily was Apple cider Vinegar. It was thought of as nutritional. Fresh fruit was very hard to come by so they made well with what they had.
By 1847, the settlers knew that by eating fresh fruit, it would help prevent diseases like scurvy. However, they did not know why. Vitamin C wasn’t discovered until 1912. Vitamins in general were discovered between 1910-1948.
To help prevent the disease, families would make batches of lemonade. With hopes that it would supplement their diets until they got their hands on fresh fruit.
