Work Smart

Homemade Almond Milk

Sometimes, we never realize how easy it is to do or make something, until we actually do it ourselves. This weekend it was Almond Milk. So easy anyone can do it!

My apologies, I forgot to get a picture of the almonds before I soaked them.

Supplies & Ingredients needed:

* Bowl

* Strainer

* Milk sieve or cheese cloth

You can find the sieve on Amazon ($6.63 for set of 3.)

πŸ‘‡

* Spoon

* Blender

* Container with lid

* Whole almonds (approx 1 lbs)

* 4 cups of purified water, filtered water or reverse osmosis water.

Optional:

* Vanilla Extract

Step 1:

Pour the bag of almonds into a container and fill with purified water, just enough that the water is covering all the almonds.

Replace lid and let the almonds soak overnight.

Next Day…..

Step 2:

Place the strainer over the bowl , then place the milk sieve over the strainer.

Pour the container of Almonds and water into the sieve. You can pour a little more water over the almonds just to rinse them off.

Dump only the water that’s in the bowl. Transfer the almonds into either the strainer or another bowl. Rinse off the sieve and put that over the bowl. My sieve has strings, you just have to pull the strings to tighten it.

Step 3:

About a cup at a time , put almonds into the blender. Then add purified water. ( enough to cover the almonds)

Once the almonds turn into pulp, remove lid and pour that into the sieve that’s over

the bowl.

I know, it’s not the most appetizing looking.

Repeat step 3 until all the almonds are pulp.

Step 4:

Squeeze the sieve with the almond pulp in it and try to squeeze out as much of the, what’s now β€œAlmond Milk” as you can. If some of the almonds did not break down enough, just put them back into the blender and do it again.

I had to have my son help me for this part

After we squeezed out the almond milk, I put the strainer back over the bowl and put the sieve with the pulp, back into the strainer and left it there for about 20 minutes to get any access milk that’s left out.

At this time, if you’d like to add vanilla extract you can. I added 2 teaspoons of

vanilla extract.

Step 5:

Taste the almond milk. If it’s too thick, you can add a little more water.

You are making this to your liking.

Delicious!!

Transfer your milk to a pitcher and put it in the fridge.

As for the almond pulp….

Transfer the pulp into a container. Put that in the fridge and save the pulp till Wednesday! I will be making something else using the almond pulp πŸ˜‹ for Wednesday’s blog post.

Enjoy!!

Good to know info-

WHY should you soak nuts?

Soaking removes phytic acid, a component of most grains, nuts and cereals that inhibits absorption of some nutrition like calcium, iron and zinc.

Tip-

How long does homemade Almond Milk last for?

Depending on the freshness of the Almonds: packaged almonds – 3-5 days

Fresh Almonds- : approx 1-2 weeks.

*This also depends on proper storage.

  • Keep the almond milk in a glass or plastic container/pitcher.
  • Once the milk comes out of the blender, allow it to cool at room temperature before putting it in the fridge.

You can freeze the almond milk so it lasts longer.

** Almond milk goes quick in my home. So I don’t have to worry about spoilage. However , some of you may find that freezing works for you OR

  • You can put a pinch of salt in the milk. The salt acts as a preservative, helping to prevent spoilage.

Why is the almond milk separating?

It’s completely normal for it to separate. Just shake the container of milk for a few seconds before using or drinking the milk. Almond milk is an emulsion. It is a mixture of two immiscible liquids (water and oil) held together by an emulsifier.
