DIY Wood Tags
So today I decided to go with the trend and make my own wooden tags. It really wasn’t hard at all. For me, the hardest part is getting it out of my head that the Miter Saw was not going to kill me. Courage Melodie… lol
Let’s create one together.
Supplies:
*Wood (I used old barn wood) pick the size you’d like yours to be. Mine are 9”L X 5”W with the top corners a 30 degree angle.
*Miter Saw (or whatever tool you choose to cut the wood with)
*4 old rusty washers
*Glue ( I used wood glue)
*Stain or paint (I used a cream chalk paint on one and a variety of acrylic paint colors on the other tag)
*Stencil if you want a pattern.
*Rope or twine.
*Any other decorations or add on’s you want to put on it.
After we cut are boards, we are going to sand them down. I used a hand sander for the front & back lightly. Then sanding the sides. I drilled a hole towards the top between the angled corners. I wanted the old roughed up look to them. If you do not want that look, then sand down the front and back as well till they are smooth. Once you are done sanding then take a rag to them and dust them off.

Now we are going to take our base paint. I chose not to use primer on mine. As I stated, I like the old look so I will distress them a bit once I’m done painting & its dry. On one of mine, I am going to use a cream color chalk paint. ( I made my own chalk paint which I will talk about in another post).
On the other wooden tag, I painted it teal. Next, I distressed the cream color tag and then used a Dark Espresso color wax on it. Putting it on in areas where I wanted the distressed look darker. Wiped the wax off and then buff it to give it a shine. When those are dry you can move on to your designs. On the Teal I used a few colors as you can see in the picture below. On the cream color tag, I made a stencil with my Cricut Explore and painted the word “Welcome” on it in a medium brown color.

For the Rusty Washers….. Put them in a plastic cup with vinegar, baking soda and a SOS pad. I let it sit outside overnight. The sun & weather helped it.

Dried them off & sprayed them with Polyurethane. I used E6000 glue and glued them on around the hole.
Take your rope and put it through the holes on both tags. Tie a knot & Voila! Finished!
